Pete Lesperance is a legendary Canadian guitarist, songwriter, and producer best known as a member of the iconic rock band Harem Scarem. With a career spanning decades, Pete's virtuosic playing, melodic sensibility, and unparalleled artistry have earned him recognition as one of the finest guitarists in the rock and melodic rock genres. Beyond his work with Harem Scarem, Pete's solo projects and collaborations showcase his versatility and passion for music, making him a beloved figure in the Canadian music scene and beyond. We had the chance to get to know him a little deeper, let's dive in!
What initially inspired you to pursue a career in music?
My parents took me to a KISS concert in 1979.
Can you share a memorable moment from your musical journey that has had a significant impact on you?
The first time Harem Scarem landed in Japan for a tour. It was a little rocker kid's dream come true.
What influences have shaped your style of music?
I had tons of musical/guitar influences as a kid and I like to think I've taken a little something from everything that's ever moved me. That being said, I don't really listen to much outside music anymore. I'm playing rock and country equally these days but I just don't feel like music is a spectators sport for me. I'd always rather have a guitar in my hands.
If you could create a soundtrack for any historical event, which one would it be and why?
I'm a total Si-Fi / space geek. It would have to be the Moon landing.
If you could teleport to any concert in history, which one would you attend and why?
The Beatles, on top of the Apple building in 1969. They were definitely my first and most important influence and that was one of the most iconic performances in musical history (IMHO).
If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
I'd love to sit down with a couple acoustic guitars and write a song with Glenn Frey. The Eagles wrote some of the most important music of my life and I never tire of it to this day. Glenn was the man!
What's the most memorable feedback or reaction you've received from a fan?
Any time someone reaches out to say that your music has helped get them through a hard time in their lives or inspired them to do something positive, that really always leaves an impact. I'm always grateful for the kindness the fans show and the whole ride has been pretty memorable.
What made you choose Plunge Audio IEMs for your performances?
I was in the market for new IEM's and happened to be good friends with Justin Kudding. (Maybe you've heard of him?) He hooked me up with a pair to try and I immediately loved them. Not needing to use molded in ears was a great upgrade and they sound fantastic.
What specific features do you look for when choosing IEMs for your performances?
Sonic excitement and comfortability. The fit of the universals is perfect.
What advice would you give to other musicians who are considering using IEMs for the first time?
I find it helpful to dial in your stage tone using your IEM's and rehearse using them as much as possible. When I first started using IEM's, as a guitarist I found them a little tricky. An amp just sounds and feels different. Get used to what you'll be using on stage and you'll be more comfortable and probably play better.
