Even the best in-ear monitors can run into small hiccups — especially when you’re performing, rehearsing, or recording often. The good news? Most issues are quick and easy to fix once you know what to look for.
Here’s a guide to troubleshooting the most common IEM problems so you can get back to focusing on what matters most — your sound.
1. My IEMs Sound Thin or Hollow
If your mix suddenly sounds distant or “AM radio”-like, it’s likely due to an improper fit or a signal chain issue.
Quick Fix:
- Check your audio source and cables to rule out connection problems.
- Try a smaller or larger tip to assess fit.

Pro tip: A solid seal makes a massive difference in bass response and clarity.
2. There’s Crackling or Distortion
Crackling is almost always caused by moisture or earwax blocking the driver or nozzle.
Quick Fix:
- Inspect the nozzle for wax and clean it gently using the included tool.
- If you suspect moisture, aim a hair dryer on warm (never hot) at the nozzle for 10 seconds.
- Store your IEMs with desiccant packs to prevent future buildup.
Avoid inserting any tools into the venting port on Unity Dynamics — it can change the tuning.
3. One Side Sounds Quieter Than the Other
This is another telltale sign of wax or moisture buildup.
Quick Fix:
- The quieter side likely has some blockage and can be gently cleaned with the included tool.
- Dry the nozzle gently with warm air.
- Double-check your cable connection — make sure the MMCX or 2-pin connector is fully seated.
4. My IEMs Keep Falling Out or Leaking Sound
A poor seal is the #1 cause of comfort and sound issues.
Quick Fix:
- Try a different tip size, better yet, try all the sizes you have on-hand
- Experiment with different finishes, textures, etc.
- Ensure cable over-ear routing helps anchor the monitors during movement.
Pro tip: Don't be afraid to mix-and-match - it’s totally normal to use a different tip size for each ear.
5. My Mix Sounds Muffled or Dull
If clarity or high-end detail disappears, it could be a clogged nozzle or fit that’s too deep.
Quick Fix:
- Clean the nozzle with the supplied tool.
- Try backing the tip out slightly — too deep of a fit can attenuate highs.
- Test another pair of tips to restore openness.
6. I Hear Ambient Noise or Stage Bleed
If you’re hearing too much of your environment, you may not be getting full isolation.
Quick Fix:
- Confirm you’re using the correct Unity model for your environment:
- Unity Stage: ~28–29 dB isolation for loud stages.
- Unity Dynamic: ~20 dB isolation with more venting.
- Refit or switch over to a denser foam tip for added isolation.
