Each piece is meticulously designed by Simon himself, blending his years of experience with spontaneous creativity. These aren’t just in-ears—they’re personal works of art, made for those seeking a truly unique sonic experience.
We sat down with Simon to dive deeper into the inspiration behind his latest creations, his design process, and what makes each Signature Series IEM stand out. Read on for the full interview!
What sparked the idea of creating the Signature Series?
The Signature Series stemmed from wanting to create custom sound signatures for clients. I spent 15 years designing custom in-ears for clients, and although I created many sound signatures, it was more about each individual pair aesthetically. Having moved to universal-fit in-ears over the last few years has given me the opportunity to explore my vast curiosity in the sound design. I lay awake most nights thinking about what I want to create and which drivers I’ll use to implement it. I’ve become very familiar with every driver I have in my arsenal and how they interact with each other, and can now intuitively design before I even start soldering. The Signature Series gives me the opportunity to explore all of this and have an outlet to get them into clients' ears as one-of-a-kind pieces. Is there a specific type of listener or performer you have in mind when crafting these IEMs?
Sometimes there is a specific listener or performer, or a person who has wondered… “can you do this?”, however, most often it is driven by my own curiosity for a certain thing. I will finish a set and sit and listen. If I get full body shivers from a song I’ve heard a hundred times, and have tears of joy of a new sonic experience, I know I’ve got something special happening. May not be for everyone, but someone will experience it as I do.Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Inspiration can come from a multitude of places, a new driver type, a piece of exotic wood that I can’t stop looking at, or some quest to answer a stirring sonic question. Many times it comes from recording my own music using the in-ears, and I hear something that I want to capture or bring to life. Depending on the instrument, double bass, acoustic guitar, voice, piano…they all steer me to “how do I bring this instrument to life naturally?”.How do you balance aesthetics with function in your IEM designs?
Aesthetics, I love. A choice piece of material, or two materials that look like they love each other, for faces and shells. I’m on the constant lookout for material that draws you in, like an amazing piece of art. Depending on the design, I may want a soft stabilized burl, or a beautiful hardwood that just requires fine sanding and raw polish. My collection over the years has become formidable, and I enjoy looking at the raw blanks, envisioning what may be. Function comes into play, as a user who performs on stage, or listens to music at work or the gym, needs something more resilient. An avid listener who sits and gets lost in sound gives me the opportunity to explore other materials as they won’t be working the in-ears so hard as a tool for performance. What makes the Signature Series IEMs stand out from other custom or universal models on the market?
All my signature series IEMs are one-of-a-kind pieces, both aesthetically and sonically. I am just fulfilling my creative curiosity. This is where I can really get to know a client, build to their subjective nature and tweak the sonic character as needed. I’m sure other companies are doing this, but I don’t know which. It is not a business venture or marketing strategy, it is something I have a burning desire to create, like my music. It haunts me until I create it, then I can let it go. To sell a set, feeds the next creation, and with each pair making its way into the world, creates a community and fulfills the longing for the ultimate sound and experience of music.
