Spotlight: Paul Deakin

We’re shining a spotlight on the incredible Paul Deakin, drummer for The Grammy-winning Mavericks! From their signature blend of country, rock, and Latin music to their countless accolades, including CMA and ACM awards, Paul’s been laying down those infectious rhythms that make The Mavericks’ sound so unique. He’s been with the band since the very beginning, bringing energy and soul to every beat. Whether it’s touring the world or recording chart-topping hits, Paul’s been at the heart of it all. Let’s take a closer look at the man behind the drums with our exclusive Q&A.

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I wasn’t very good at sports and somewhat socially awkward so…I figured it was my best bet at not dying alone. That and The Monkees.

Can you share a memorable moment from your musical journey that has had a significant impact on you?

So many on the grand outlook of life but specific to my musical growth was getting fired for overplaying and having shitty time. Luckily it happened early enough in my journey to rethink my role as a drummer and act accordingly. And now I derive almost all of my pleasure playing by being hive minded. It’s all about the groove and flow.

What influences have shaped your style of music?

Anything and everything! From Benny Goodman to Kendrick Lamar. Beethoven to Hank Williams. I’m constantly searching for something I have never heard before stylistically.

If you could create a soundtrack for any historical event, which one would it be and why?

Can it be a future event? Like Trump losing the 2024 election in a landslide? I’m thinking it would start with Aaron Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and finish with with Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling".

If you could teleport to any concert in history, which one would you attend and why?

Jimi Hendrix 1967 in London. Opens with Sgt Peppers with The Beatles in the audience. His joy of playing was his X factor in my opinion. Truly inspirational.

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

Of course I have imagined playing in every band I have loved. I’m sure I’m not the first drummer who played “Sunday Bloody Sunday” while soundchecking at Red Rocks. Realistically, I love to play with anyone who has the passion for creating. It’s best when the agenda is only the creation itself…

What's the most memorable feedback or reaction you've received from a fan?

It’s a toss up between "You have impeccable posture!" and. "Man…You should have been in the audience!"

What made you choose Plunge Audio IEMs for your performances?

So my wife Tracy and Simon’s wife Marican were best friends in Winnipeg. In 2000, The Mavericks were opening for Dave Mathews at The Gorge in Washington State. That is where Simon and I met and became brothers. A bit after that he started making IEMs and sent me a pair. That changed everything. I have only used Plunge Audio since then. Everyone, bar none, that I have turned onto them has been blown away. Every member of The Mavericks including crew has a pair. They are truly second to none!

What specific features do you look for when choosing IEMs for your performances?

As a drummer, I need full range. I needed a sub woofer or a “buttkicker” before for the kick drum. I no long need either with my Plunge IEMs. I truly believe they have made me a better player.

What advice would you give to other musicians who are considering using IEMs for the first time?

The best advice I have other than using Plunge, is to not underestimate the universal fit model. It was a game changer.
