What initially inspired you to pursue a career in music?
As a child on the East Coast I was surrounded by family music, it’s always been a big part of my life. As time went on I started playing several instruments and music became the biggest part of who I was, in fact, it still is.
Can you share a memorable moment from your musical journey that has had a significant impact on you?
The first time stepping onto a tour bus for a major label music act, looking around at some of the most successful musicians in the world, I was terrified! Then the first sound check came and I was having a bit of an issue. Steuart Smith (guitarist for the “Eagles”) who had played on all the biggest sessions at the time, wandered over, gave me a hand and shared some wonderful advice. That moment I learned greatness doesn’t have to come with an ego, kindness can raise everyone’s skill and confidence up. I jokingly tell people who I work with these days that “Egos are expensive”. I always try to be supportive and complementary with people I share the stage or sessions with because of that experience.
What influences have shaped your style of music?
I grew up in a town where there was a multi-format radio station, there could be a 70s country song next to a modern rock song. That really helped me develop my appreciation for different genres, but I always gravitated to country music because of my family influence. As I mature, I find myself listening to just about everything, really enjoy the challenge of absorbing the different styles.
If you could create a soundtrack for any historical event, which one would it be and why?
I think the end of World War II. I’ve had past family members express to me the joy and prosperity that seemed to happen immediately following. Most of the world’s collective relief and gratitude would probably be a joyous piece of music. It would likely be a welcome song in this day and age.
If you could teleport to any concert in history, which one would you attend and why?
I think the first time a symphony was ever played to a public audience would be something to see. I recently went to a Symphony and I felt like I was watching a magic trick unfold before my very eyes. All these musicians independently reading their piece of music, while the sonics combine into one collective thought. Be neat to see the composer, not unlike a magician, waiting patiently for everyone to see and hear the result.
If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with many of my favourite artist either as a player, mix engineer or a producer under my Barrytone Studio name. Hundreds of acts from Taylor Swift to Lyle Lovett... Dean Brody to Michelle Wright. But if I could go back in time, I’d love to sit with Johnny Cash and talk about the Bitter Tears album. Maybe take a little more time with it and him.
What's the most memorable feedback or reaction you've received from a fan?
You know, I’ve been lucky to have received a lot of positive feedback from thousands of people, whether it be fans, family or musicians. But I think my kids watching me play and yelling “That was awesome!!! You’re so amazing!!!” while I exit the stage. It’s probably the best it could ever be.
What made you choose Plunge Audio IEMs for your performances?
I chose Plunge Audio for a number of reasons at the beginning. All my peers were so happy with the service, I’m an advocate for Canadian businesses if I can be, so I reached out. I was delighted to become part of the family and proud to be still. As Plunge Audio’s Innovation continues, I’m more and more excited and honoured to be part of the team.
What specific features do you look for when choosing IEMs for your performances?
I absolutely need a comfortable, true sounding, durable IEM, Plunge Audio is the only IEM company that has ever provided me with that. In fact, Plunge Audio is the only IEM manufacturer that has asked me what I want to hear, not just direct me to the guitar player model. Completely committed to making the musician unaware they’re wearing IEMs, sonically and physically.
What advice would you give to other musicians who are considering using IEMs for the first time?
If you’re new to the IEM world (depending on your position) try to give yourself as close to a collaborative environment as you can, rather than a solo environment. I’ve witnessed many musicians digress collaboratively by isolating themselves, which IEMs give you the ability to do. Once you have a position on your pack level-wise, try not to adjust, volume increases and decreases can really change the image of your mix.
