This month, we’re shining our Artist Spotlight on Lussilia — a Venezuelan-born singer-songwriter based in Vancouver whose music bridges Latin American folklore and modern pop. Blending joropo and tonada with iconic instruments like the Venezuelan harp, cuatro, and maracas, she crafts a sound that is both deeply rooted and refreshingly contemporary. A truly unique voice in the Canadian music scene, Lussilia brings an unmistakable warmth and authenticity to every project she touches — learn even more about her in our Q&A below.

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in music?

My career in music was inspired by a lifelong dedication to artistic expression. Music has moved me since I was very young, and I found my identity through my voice first and then through movement and dance. It became the place where I learned to understand myself. I’ve always been curious about sounds and how instruments, cultures, and languages blend together. That curiosity pushed me to study jazz, explore Venezuelan folk, and create my own fusion.

I pursued music because I wanted to experiment, collaborate, and build something that feels uniquely multicultural. Performing gives me a deep sense of belonging, and the energy between the stage and the audience is something I can’t replicate anywhere else.

Music is my way of bringing Latin American culture to new audiences. Seeing people connect with the rhythms of Venezuela, even if they have never heard them before, inspires me to keep creating. My hope is that my music continues to build cultural bridges.

Can you share a memorable moment from your musical journey that has had a significant impact on you?

One of the most memorable moments in my musical journey was the night I stood on the Hard Rock Marseille stage with a band I had founded during my study abroad program in university. I remember looking out at hundreds of people and thinking, how did this happen in just a couple of months? There I was, far from home, performing with new friends from France and feeling this rush of adrenaline. It was one of those moments you freeze in your mind because it reminds you exactly why you do what you do. It made me feel deeply connected to myself, to the music, and to everyone around me.

What influences have shaped your style of music?

It has definitely been the constant changes throughout my life, especially moving so much and adapting to new places. Those experiences shaped my style and pushed me to explore who I was and how to express that evolving identity through music. That journey shows up in my fusion of Latin rhythms and multilingual lyrics. My sound is shaped by the mix of cultures that make up my life, and I’m always looking for ways to bring my roots into a global context.

If you could create a soundtrack for any historical event, which one would it be and why?

I would choose the World Cup. It’s one of the few moments where the whole world comes together to celebrate culture, passion, and unity. Fun fact, my latest song Nuestra Fiesta was actually created with the hope that FIFA will hear it for the 2026 World Cup, as a song that represents all Latin American countries. The energy, the pride, and the intense emotion of millions of fans is exactly the kind of moment I’d love my music to be part of.

If you could teleport to any concert in history, which one would you attend and why?

Shakira is one of my favourite artists. I would teleport to her Tour de la Mangosta (or Tour of the Mongoose) because the setlist included some of the songs that first ignited my passion for becoming an artist. The dancing and the way she blended folklore with fusion were so powerful to me. Seeing how she presented this on a global stage is what inspired me in the first place, and I would love to experience that moment of inspiration all over again.

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

Many come to mind, but the first one is Shakira. Her discipline, visionary mindset, and the way she approaches her art have inspired me since I was young, and it’s something I would love to experience firsthand. I think the worlds we carry in our minds would find a harmonious meeting point in music, where we could dive deeper into exploration and experimental sounds.

What's the most memorable feedback or reaction you've received from a fan?

My connection with fans is very close, and one of the moments that moves me the most is when someone who doesn’t speak Spanish comes up to me and says, “I don’t understand the words, but I can feel your energy and the emotion, and it really moved me.” Hearing that is one of the biggest gifts I could ever receive, because that’s the intention behind my entire project: to make people feel something, no matter the language.

How did your collaboration with Plunge Audio begin?

I met Simon from Plunge Audio many years ago when a colleague told me about his custom-made IEMs. At the time, I was singing salsa in a cover band in Calgary, and he welcomed me into his shop with so much enthusiasm. To be honest, I had no idea what I was looking at, but he took the time and care to explain every feature and detail to me. I probably pretended I understood more than I did because he was so passionate about his craft.

Back then, I couldn’t afford a pair, but every time I went on stage I would tell myself, “One day I’m going to have those, and I’m getting them from Simon.”

Fast forward to years later, after founding my own company and finally being able to invest in the gear I needed, Plunge Audio was the only option in my mind. I didn’t even consider looking elsewhere. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone as passionate and dedicated to their work as Simon, and what made it even more special was that he remembered me, now over a phone call from Vancouver. That was mind-blowing and humbling.

I love my in-ears, and every time someone asks about them I say, “Have you heard of these? They’re the best. Period.”

What specific features do you look for when choosing IEMs for your performances?

I look for reliability above everything. I need to trust that what I’m hearing on stage is consistent and accurate. I also look for depth and colour in the sound, so I can feel all the layers of the music and stay connected to the nuance of my performance. And of course, durability is essential.

What advice would you give to other musicians who are considering using IEMs for the first time?

My advice is simple: IEMs are an absolute game changer, especially once you experience the clarity and control they give you on stage. I always recommend Plunge Audio. The reasons are straightforward: the quality is top tier, the customer service and support are unmatched, and they’re Canadian made. Having a team that truly cares about your sound and takes the time to guide you makes all the difference when you’re starting out with IEMs.
